The Ambassador and his retinue followed an unusual course to Beijing. Whereas most travelers went primarily by river, floating comfortably along the Grand Canal, the Dutch mission went overland, through impoverished areas during the heart of the bitter north Chinese winter. It was a difficult voyage, but they witnessed parts of China unseen by all but a few Europeans.
